Deschutes tree planting, near South Junction.
Deschutes
The Lower Deschutes River today is a mosaic of healthy and degraded riparian areas. While most river bends support bands of Alders of varying age classes, other bends are completely denuded of trees. Oregon Trout set out to plant 100,000 trees in the Deschutes basin before the end of 2008. With the help and support of our partners (including but not limited to Fly Fisher’s Club of Oregon, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, Northwest Fly Fishers, Bella Vista Foundation, and Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District), hundreds of volunteers, we’ve planted 62,000 trees to date which will provide needed long-term water quality and habitat benefits to the Deschutes and its tributaries. An additional 10,000 trees have been secured for planting in Spring of 2008. To reach 100,000 trees, we will continue plantings in subsequent years.
